Going to a restaurant can be a nightmare if you have a bad waiter. In this famous scene from a famous UK TV show, a bad waitress ruins a meal. You must remember that in European culture, meals are served in 'courses'. Meals have three courses. (In Chinese culture, on the other hand, all the courses come together and you finish with the soup, right?)
First comes the soup. There is usually a different soup every day. This is called 'the soup of the day'.
Then after the soup comes the 'main course'.
After the main course comes the 'dessert' or 'pudding' or 'sweet'.
At the end of the meal, you leave some small money for the waitress, usually 10% of the total cost of the meal, or more if the service was really good. It's up to you. This is called a 'tip'.
Listen carefully and try to hear the following set-phrases used by the waitress. These are common set-phrases used when dining in restaurants.
Vocabulary:
Ready to order? = Have you decided what you want to eat?
I'll just go find out.
I'll just go check.
Won't be one moment. = Wait a minute
Right away. = immediately
peckish = hungry
And to follow? = What do you want for your next course?
No tip?
