Britain's Got Talent

Do you remember Susan Boyle, the Scottish woman who became world famous after her performance on the talent show Britain's Got Talent? This year, the same talent show introduced to the public this singer Edward Reid, who caused a sensation in the UK after his performance on the show.

Here is the performance. As you can see, the audience loved it. But why?


The reason is because, not only is he imitating Whitney Houston, but he is singing 'nursery rhymes'. Nursery rhymes are children's songs, the kind of songs very little children learn from their grandmothers, the kind of songs little kids learn in kindergarten. These kind of songs are very old, and are passed from generation to generation Everyone in the UK knows these songs, we have known them from our very earliest childhood. In this vdeo, Edward is singing the following four nursery rhymes:

1.
Old Macdonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O
And on his farm he had some sheep, E-I-E-I-O
With a "baa-baa" here and a "baa-baa" there
Here a "baa" there a "baa"
Everywhere a "baa-baa"
Old Macdonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.

This song is used to teach the sounds animals make to little kids.

2.
Twinkle twinkle little star
How I wonder what you are
Up above the world so high
Like a diamond in the sky
Twinkle twinkle little star
How I wonder what you are.

'Twinkle' is the word used to describe how a star shines.

3.
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again.

Humpty Dumpty is a name. He is usually shown as an egg. The song is about how once you break an egg (or anything else), you cannot repair it.

4.
If you're happy and you know it
Clap your hands
If you're happy and you know it
Clap your hands
If you're happy and you know it,
And you really want to show it
Clap your hands

Then it's repeated with 'stamp your feet' and other actions.

  2. oh, I don't like this kind of show at all! but I know many of my students do. One of my Taiwanese friends was asking me about this song, and why it got such a reaction from the audience, so I thought it would be interesting to write about it.
