The Wire

My all time favourite TV series is The Wire. It's about the city of Baltimore in the USA. Baltimore has the highest drug related crime rate in the world, and the city is full of terrible problems. In the first season the show focusses on the efforts of a team of policemen to clean the streets of drugs. In the second series it focusses on the criminals who supply the drugs. In the third season it focusses on the politicians and political corruption which contribute to the city's problem. Other seasons focus on the media and how they contribute to the situation. Each season adds another layer of the story. It's brilliantly acted, with very good writing.

In this scene, the two main characters, a white policeman called McNulty, and a black policeman called Bunk go to an empty apartment where a woman had been murdered. They reconstruct the crime. What's so good about this scene is that they only use two words: 'f*ck', and 'motherf*cker'.

You might find this offensive, but I think it's interesting because it shows how many different meanings these two words have. It means surprise, shock, confusion, anger and so on.

Watch the scene, and count the number of times you hear 'f*ck' and the number of times you hear 'motherf*cker'. what do you think each one means?
