Dame Edna Everage is an Australian celebrity and comedienne. She has the kind of humour which is full of double meaning. She says nice things to people, but they can be interpreted as nasty, rude, or socially unacceptable. Dame Edna is the creation of an Australian comedian, Barry Humphries.
Vocabulary:
- possum = a small fury animal found only in Australia. Dame Edna calls everyone 'possum'
- you've aged = you've got older
- a wicked old tease = I am just teasing you
- pulling your jambe = jambe means 'leg' in French. The idiom is 'pulling your leg', which means teasing you. Dame Edna is using jambe because the show is happening in Quebec, a French Canadian province.
- fossil = an old rock in which the remains of an animal are preserved. 'Fossil' is also an impolite name for an old person
- that was uncalled for = a way of apologising after you say something rude
