The King's Speech

We were talking about this movie in class last night, and I found that some people have not seen it yet. I recommend it highly. It has great acting, really good British English pronunciation, and is funny and moving as well. Here is a scene.

Vocabulary:

  • As far as I see it = this is what I think, but I may be wrong
  • mechanical difficulties = difficulties with the actual muscle movements which are made in speaking
  • flabby = soft and weak
  • diaphragm = the muscle which separates your lungs from your stomach. This muscle helps you to breathe more, and to speak louder
  • Your Royal Highness = this is what you call a king or a queen when you meet them in the supermarket (lol)

At 023, you will hear the king and his doctor say: "Jack and Jill went up the hill..."
This is a nursery rhyme. Nursery rhymes are very simple poems that we learn as very little children in kindergarten. This one is very famous:

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water
Jack fell down and broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after.

  • pail = bucket
  • crown = top of your head
  • tumbling = falling

  1. I read a article about how the brain works after I've seen this movie. In the article, the author talks the movie for an example to explain two different ways for human learning. This inspires me when I try to speak English better.
