One of the highlights of my trip was the opportunity to meet Alfred Brendel. Brendel is one of the greatest pianists in the world. He specialises in the music of Schubert, Bach, Beethoven and Mozart. Here he is playing some Schubert. Schubert is my favourite composer, and Brendel is the best interpreter of Schubert, in my view.
Brendel retired from playing concerts in December 2008, and I was very sad, because although I have many of his CDs, I never had the chance to hear him play a live concert. He gave up performing so that he could concentrate on writing poetry and essays about music.
However, when I was in Wales a few weeks ago, I attended the Hay Literature Festival, and Brendel was one of the guest speakers. I went to hear him talk about his life and his work. He has just published a book of poems, and after the talk, he did a book signing.
He signed my book!
