Here is a scene from the first episode, when Sherlock meets his life long friend and assistant, Dr Watson, for the first time. The scene is full of very useful idioms.
Vocabulary:
- bit different from my day = it has changed a lot
- you've no idea = I strongly agree with you
- lipstick = paint that women put on their lips
- it wasn't working for me = I didn't like it
- days on end = a long long time
- flatmate = roommate (British English)
- wasn't a difficult leap = it's not difficult to reach this conclusion
- got my eye on s/th = I'm thinking about buying something
- gotta dash = I am in a hurry, and I must leave now
From 2.00, Sherlock gives a long speech in which he shows how brilliant he is by telling Watson everything he knows about him after such a short meeting. This is what he says:
"I know you're an army doctor, and you've been invalided home from Afghanistan, and I know you've got a brother who's worried about you, but you won't go to him for help because you don't approve of him, possibly because he's an alcoholic, but more likely because he recently walked out on his wife and I know that your therapist thinks you're lymph psychosomatic, quite correctly I'm afraid. That's enough to be going on with, don't you think?"
- invalided home = sent home from the army due to illness or physical problem
- more likely = a better reason
- walked out on his wife = left his wife
- therapist = doctor
- lymph psychosomatic = an illness of the mind and body
- enough to be going on with = that is enough information for the moment
I love this drama, and thank you for the explanation of those lines. It's very useful! I can't wait to watch season 3. Crazy for Sherlock Holmes»→♥
