Calendar Girls

I saw this lovely British movie over the weekend.  It's about  a group of middle aged women who decide to make a topless calendar - pictures of women with no clothes on showing their breasts - to raise money for charity. Usually these kind of calendars feature beautiful young women, so there are lots of jokes about how middle aged women are just as sexy as young women.

The movie is filmed in Yorkshire, one of the most beautiful counties in England, and even you don't enjoy the breasts, you will enjoy the views and the scenery! Haha! The movie has an excellent cast, with all the best British actresses. You will hear some lovely British English accents, and British English slang.

It's funny and sad and makes you think about the difference between being naked, and being nude. It's based on a true story. Highly recommended.

Vocabulary:

  • anyone fancy some chips? = does anyone want to eat french fries?
  • did its part =  do your part is an idiom which means 'contribute your help and duty'
  • homegrown vegetables = vegetables you grow yourself in your own garden
  • Thank heavens = thank god!
  • dull = boring
  • glorious = wonderful, beautiful
  • whip your bras off = take your bra off very quickly
  • they'll never go through with it = 'go through with something' is an idiom which means to do what you promised, even though it's difficult or unpleasant
  • strap marks = the marks left on your skin when you wear a strap right next to your body
