Today is the birthday (and the death day) of the greatest writer, dramatist and poet in the English language. Today is also the day of St George, who is the Patron Saint of England. So we can say that today -23rd April- is the national day of England.
We know very little about Shakespeare's life. All we know is that he was an actor, and a theatre manager, and that he became very rich. There is even a theory that he didn't write his plays, but that they were written by someone else, who then used Shakespeare's name. This theory is called the 'Earl of Oxford Theory', because some scholars think it was the Earl of Oxford who wrote the plays. The Earl ( a kind of Lord) was a very important man in the time of Shakespeare.
Every year I celebrate his birthday with my students, so this year I want to recommend an excellent movie about this theory: Anonymous.
Here is a trailer for the movie. Scroll down for vocabulary.
