It's based on a real story, and all the characters are real people. The movie gives a brilliant look at the differences between British and US acting styles.
I have always been fascinated by Marilyn Monroe. She was a beautiful, intelligent woman, who created a character of someone who was very sexy but not very intelligent.
In Western culture, blonde people are regarded as slightly stupid. We have the idiom: "a dumb blonde" and Marilyn created the perfect example of this kind of person. But in real life, she was very clever and read a lot of books. The movie tells all this.
The acting is excellent, and there are some beautiful shots of England.
Highly recommended.
Vocabulary:
- Yardley's Lavender = the name of a famous English perfume. (Marilyn said that she only wore Chanel perfume in bed - and nothing else)
- I long to see her = long to V means you want to do something very much
- be careful not to get in too deep = don't fall in love with her completely
- Marilyn Monroe fancying you? = 'fancy someone' means to like someone as a lover
- I wouldn't buy the little girl lost act, if I were you = 'buy something' means 'believe in something', the 'little girl lost act' means Marilyn's shyness and innocence, which is not real but some kind of performance
Hi, it's Will, who was a student in your TOEFL speaking class in Apex. I always wanted to post some comments on your blog but had difficulties with the webpages. Sorry that I'm a FB habitant.
回覆刪除I haven't watched MWWM but now think about watching it after reading your post. I did check out the trailer and believed that Michelle Williams is by far the best Marylin Monroe ever (much better than Lindsay Lohan's cover). Plus that it's interesting to see Eddie Redmayne as such a shy-guy-fall-in-love type again, which remains me of his role in BBC's version of "Tess of the D'Urbervilles."
BTW, I want to thank you. I just got my latest TF score report, which is 103 in total. It's a big improvement form the previous one. However, with all the tips you've tought me, I'm expecting a higher score. I'm going to retake it. Anyway, I just want to say you are such a great teacher.
Hi Will,
回覆刪除That's great news about your TOEFL score! Well done!
Yeah, Michelle Williams is brilliant as Marilyn! And if you like Eddie Redmayne, have you seen Savage Grace, with Julianne Moore? He's really good in that as well.
Thank you. However, I'm sure that there is still room for improvement. I'm going to take some other speaking classes for practicing, but not now. There are still GRE and some other stuffs have to be done. I will show up several month later, hope that you will still be working at Apex then.
回覆刪除I didn't konw this film you mention. But it really looks great to me. I started to know Eddie Redmayne form The Good Shepherd, in which he played Matt Damon's rebel son. It seems like that Eddie is always good at playing some spoiled teens with emotional problems. Anyway, Julianne Moore is enough to make me watch it.
