Moonstruck

I love this movie. It has some really funny dialogue, and gives a good picture of Italian American culture. In this scene, Cher has come back from her first date with her new boyfriend, played by a very young Nicholas Cage in one of his first roles. She is 'moonstruck' (madly in love). But, another, older, richer man who wants to marry her shows up. This scene has lots of great slang in it.

Watch the scene and try to hear this vocabulary:
Vocabulary:

  • What the hell = you can say this when you want to emphasise your shock or surprise about something. It's not very polite.
  • I have a hangover = a headache and upset stomach from too much alcohol the night before
  • Pop = father
  • showed up = appeared, visited
  • it ain't = it isn't
  • lovebite = the mark you make on someone's neck when you bite them during sex
  • your life's going down the toilet = your life is a mess, and it's getting worse
  • cover up = hide
  • that damn thing = you use 'damn' when you are angry
  • you get it = you open the door
  • answer the door = open the door
