I watched this old classic movie on the weekend. It's about money, and greed. In it, the main character, gordon Gekko, gives a great speech about greed. According to Gordon, greed is good, greed is the driving force of civilisation and development. I think it's interesting to hear this point of view, as my view is that greed is behind all the financial problems since 2008. I'm interested to hear what you think.
Listen to the speech and try to hear this vocabulary:
Vocabulary:
- 'for lack of a better word' = you can say this to make it clear that you're not sure the word you are using is suitable for the situation
- cuts through = get directly to the heart of a problem
- capture the essence of something = get to the heart of a something
- evolutionary spirit = the idea of evolution
- mark s/th = make something noticeable
- upward = moving up
- surge = strong movement, like a wave
- 'you mark my words' = you can say this when you are making some kind of prediction that you want people to remember
- malfunctioning = not working properly

In my opinion, there are many better words than "greed", such as need, lack, or desire, which give people a boost to the world of nowadays. It is greed that leads to destruction.

回覆刪除Yes, I agree with you, Hank. Need is more powerful than greed.
