In this class we talked about Japanese and Russian naming systems.
English names have a minimum of two words, a given name, and a family name. The given name usually comes first (except when completing official forms, when the family name is written first):
Quentin Brand
Some English people have a middle name, or even two or more middle names, but these middle names are not usually used.
Quentin Thomas Brand
We call each other by our given name, or by our family name with Mr, or Mrs in front of the name. You should not use Mr or Mrs with the given name.
Mr Brand = CORRECT
Quentin = CORRECT
Mr Quentin = INCORRECT
In addition, lots of English given names have a short form that we use for people very close to us. Here are some of the more common short forms:
Catherine = Kate, Cate
Charlotte = Lottie, Charlie
Elisabeth = Liz, Lisa, Beth, Betty
Isabella = Bella
Margaret = Mags, Maggie, Greta
Patricia = Pat, Tricia
Matthew = Mat
James = Jim
Jonathan = Jack, Jon, Johnnie
Michael = Mike, Mick, Micky
Robert = Rob, Bob, Bobbie
William = Bill, Billy, Will, Willy
