TOEFL Speaking Tips Task 4

In task 4, make sure you talk about the reading first. Remember, the reading is general information, the lecture is specific information about the reading.

In task 4 you need to use set-phrases which are suitable for academic English. In academic English it is not appropriate to talk about yourself. You need to focus on the information itself, not on how you receive the information.

Here are some set-phrases which you should NOT use:

In the lecture we can know... NOT CORRECT
In the reading passage we can know...NOT CORRECT
The reading passage tells us that...NOT CORRECT
The professor tells us that...NOT CORRECT
...in which we've learned that...NOT CORRECT

These set-phrases are all suitable in academic Chinese, but they are NOT suitable for academic English. Do NOT use them. They will reduce your score!

(I don't know where people get these set-phrases. Is there like a Chinese website or something that is giving these set-phrases? Is another teacher giving them to you? If so, do NOT listen to them. They are WRONG!!!)

Here are some set-phrases you can use:

The reading passage is about... CORRECT
The reading passage mentions... CORRECT
The reading passage describes... CORRECT
The professor in the lecture gives more details about the reading. CORRECT
The professor says... CORRECT
The professor mentions... CORRECT

These set-phrases are appropriate for academic English. You will get a higher score if you use them.

  1. In my opinion, there is no teacher taught students to write such set-phrases but chinese writing habits. That's why your classes are useful.

  3. I think there are some mistakes in the second section:
    1. In task 4 you need to use set-phrases which are suitable for academic English.
    2. You need to focus on the information itself, not on how you receive the information.

And I wonder why you use "The reading passage", is this the same as "The reading message"?

  4. oh you have sharp eyes! Thanks for letting me know about the typos.
'The reading message' is just wrong. Always use 'the reading passage'.
