The Oscars: What did they say?

So, this weekend, we were all eagerly watching the Oscars, right? When I was a kid, I used to dream about winning an Oscar, and I would think about my acceptance speech (didn't you do this too?). Click this link here and watch the video. What did the winners say:

 

Christian Bale = Best supporting actor
"What a room full of talented and inspirational people and what the hell am I doing here, in the midst of you? It's such an honour."

(He has a strong London accent. Can you hear it?)

Vocabulary:
what the hell = emphasise surprise and shock
What is that? What the hell is that? (more emphatic)
What is going on? What the hell is going on? (more emphatic)

Natalie Portman = Best actress
"I want to thank my parents who are right there, first and foremost, for giving me my life and for giving me the opportunity to work from such an early age and for showing me every day how to be a good human being by example."

(She has a standard American accent. Can you hear it?)

Vocabulary:
first and foremost = first and most important
First and foremost, I want to thank my teacher.
The opposite of this is 'last but not least', which means last but still very important.
Last but not least, I want to thank my teacher.

David Seidler = Best original screenplay
"My father always said to me I would be a late bloomer."

(He has a Transatlantic accent, half British, and half American. Can you hear it?)

Vocabulary:
a late bloomer = someone who finds success when they are much older, like a flower that blooms at the very end of summer.
David Seidler is a late bloomer because he won his Oscar at the age of 73.

Colin Firth = Best actor
"I'm afraid I have to warn you that I'm experiencing stirrings somewhere in the upper abdominals which are threatening to form themselves into dance moves, which, joyous though they may be for me, would be extremely problematic if they make it to my legs before I get off stage."

(He has a southern English standard accent, like mine. Can you hear it?)


Vocabulary:
stirrings = feelings, movements, excitement
upper abdominals = his stomach
are threatening to = may, might, usually used to talk about something negative which might happen
It's threatening to rain. 
joyous = full of joy, happiness
problematic = causing lots of problems
make it to = arrive, reach
I need to make it to school by 9.00 otherwise I will be late.
